Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1- Episodes 11-20 Blu-ray Review

The second half of the season is even better than the first.

In the second part of season 1 (which contains episodes 11-20), the adventures of Dal, Rok-Tahk, Zero, Jankom Pog, Murf, and Gwyn on board the Protostar continues on. This time around the plots involve a remote Starfleet communications station, the REAL Captain Janeway, a Starfleet manhunt for the Protostar, the Protostar’s secret weapon which threatens Starfleet, the Diviner and his new ally, a Borg encounter, a Starfleet worshiping alien race whose lives are in peril, a familiar face from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” with Okona, Murf’s new form, Dal’s identity, character backstories, holodeck adventures, a body swap, and a new mission.

A Nickelodeon animated Star Trek series seemed like a gamble, but creators Kevin and Dan Hageman have managed to tell their own unique story in the universe while tapping into the past. The show’s future may be in flux at the moment (get this show a new home!), but it has found a devoted fanbase among Trek fans and deservedly so. It’s the most underrated Trek series. Sure, it took a little while to find its footing in the first 10 episodes, but it’s been warp speed ever since.

The second half of the episode really solidified what this show is and what it could be. It’s a part “Star Trek: Voyager” sequel of sorts, it’s exploring a different era of Trek, and it’s introducing new characters and new species into the Trek world. Sure, we see a few familiar faces ala Okona and Janeway (well, technically more than one Janeway) who add a lot to the show, but the storytellers never lose sight of whose show this is- the new characters (especially Dal).

There’s so much to admire in these 10 episodes. “All The World’s A Stage” is a clever tie-in to the original Trek episode “Obsession,” “Preludes” offers up a lot of characterization of the main characters, and the two-part finale “Supernova” is eventful and wonderfully sets up the second season (whenever that is coming out).

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.37:1 1080p. How does it look? The colorful animation really pops in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track delivers crisp dialogue, music and sound effects. The opening theme never sounded so good.

Extras:
* 4 character cards
* “The Odyssey Of Prodigy”- A 21 minute featurette that features cast and crew interviews about the episodes, story and character arcs of the 2nd half of the season.
* “Producing Prodigy: The Planets”-A rundown of the planetary adventures.
* “Producing Prodigy: The Ships”- A look at the starships and starship designs in ‘Prodigy.’
