I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer Blu-ray Review

“I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer” is for completists only.
In this third entry in the slasher franchise, “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer” begins with a July 4th prank that goes horribly awry at a Broken Ridge, Colorado carnival. Friends Amber, Colby, Zoe, Roger and PJ wanted to scare people with the Fisherman legend by having the Fisherman appear and attack PJ, but PJ winds up dying accidentally. Since no one knows this was a prank and who is really responsible, Amber, Colby, Zoe and Roger decide to cover up the crime. Nearly 1 year later, it seems someone out there knows the truth about what the 4 friends did and is looking to punish them.
2006’s made for home video “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer” is a sequel many probably don’t even know existed and, well, it’s not hard to see why. It’s a cheaply made, instantly forgettable sequel to a franchise that has yet to pan out. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” may be a 90’s slasher classic, but the sequels fell flat as did the recent Amazon series. There’s talks of a new sequel in the works so maybe there’s hope for that one.
Going back to ‘Always,’ the sequel has so little going for it. The script by Michael D. Weiss feels cut-and-paste and strangely adds in a supernatural element that feels so out of place in this horror franchise. The direction by Sylvain White and editing by David Checel reeks of early 2000’s hipsterness with its hard rock fads, hair styles and fashions, MTV and WB style flashing light edits, and dude bros galore. The biggest sin is that there’s no intensity or sense of horror to anything happening here due to the slow pace and bland cinematography by Stephen M. Katz. Katz couldn’t even take advantage of the scenic Utah shooting locations (and there’s some really cool ones here).
The cast is largely comprised of genre actors, TV actors and Canadian actors that you may recognize but don’t know the names of. Don Shanks (who is a famous stuntman that also played Michael Myers once in the fifth installment) is the Fisherman here. It’s a shame he didn’t get to do more on screen. Brooke Nevin gives the best performance as Amber. David Paetkau and Torrey DeVitto are also decent in their respective roles as Colby and Zoe.
“I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer” is available on Movie Zyng and through other online retailers Sept. 26, 2023.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? Given that the movie looks inherently cheap, not even a Blu-ray transfer can change that fact. With that said, the transfer is still decent enough.
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A generally satisfactory 5.1 track that really comes alive during music heavy scenes.
Extras:
* Theatrical trailer
* Commentary by director Sylvain White
* “The Making Of I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”- A near 27 minute making of with set footage, cast and crew interviews, and a look at make-up, choreography, and more.
