You Hurt My Feelings Blu-ray Review

“You Hurt My Feelings” is an intelligent adult comedy.

In 2023’s indie comedy “You Hurt My Feelings,” the story revolves around a middle-aged married couple (Beth and Don) living in New York. Don works as a therapist while Beth is a teacher and author who is working on a new novel. The two have an adult son (Eliot) who is a frustrated wannabe playwright. While out shopping one day, Beth and her sister Sarah overhears Don telling Sarah’s husband Mark that he isn’t a fan of her new novel. Devastated by this reveal, Beth finds her relationship with Don breaking apart, but can it be repaired?

Written and directed by Nicole Holofcener (best known for “Enough Said” and “Walking And Talking”), “You Hurt My Feelings” tackles subject matters not often explored in cinema with unspoken feelings, a lack of honesty to avoid hurt feelings, professional doubts and insecurities, and broken trust. Holofcener has a knack for exploring these issues through a comedic lens in a largely grounded fashion all while crafting well developed characters. Of course, that’s not all that’s going on this layered comedy as the filmmaker also delves into subjects of communication, family, parenting, city life, friendships, and relationships. The notion of painful truths also heavily plays into the story. There’s a lot going on here in a mere 93 minute runtime.

The cast amplifies the already rewarding material. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in peak form here as Beth. Having already worked with Holofcener before in the underrated “Enough Said,” it’s clear these two have a great working dynamic together. Tobias Menzies of “Game Of Thrones” fame shines as Don (who is also having a sort of mid-life crisis). There are several notable performances here as well from Michaela Watkins, Arian Moayed and real-life married couple Amber Tambyln and David Cross (who played a couple in therapy).
