Spinout Blu-ray Review

“Spinout” is a very 60’s Elvis movie.
In 1966’s “Spinout,” Elvis Presley plays Mike McCoy who sings in a 4 member rock band with Les (the female drummer), guitarists Curly and Larry. He also races cars on the side. Mike wants to live the single life, but he finds himself being pursued by not one, or two but three women who all want to marry him. His suitors include Lesh, an author (Diana) that is looking for the perfect man, and the daughter (Cynthia) of a wealthy and powerful businessman (Howard). It’s quite possible though that each of these women may find love elsewhere. The other key subplot here involves Howard wanting Mike to drive his new Fox 5 car in a big climactic race, but there’s an ongoing feud between the two.
Elvis Presley is one of the best rock and roll musicians and entertainers of all time, but his films weren’t always the best with the exception of “King Creole,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Viva Las Vegas” (not to mention his concert films which are all excellent). The Norman Taurog directed “Spinout” isn’t one of Presley’s most well-known movies, but like many of his films, it will likely serve as comfort food (especially to those that grew up on them). It’s very much a cheeseball romantic comedy that is pure 60’s through and through. There’s dopey humor (see the fainting Philip character), go-go dancing galore, a beach movie vibe (without the beach), old fashioned romantic hijinks, and rock music that has a very Monkees and Beatles vibe at times. Add in some racing scenes complete with sped-up scenes and you pretty much know what you’re getting here.
On the subject of the music, the soundtrack doesn’t boast any major hits, but there’s still some memorable tunes like the title track, “Never Say Yes,” and the tender ballad “All That I Am.”
Cast wise, Elvis is in fine form here (although he’s much more alive when he’s singing). Deborah Walley steals the movie as the charming tomboy Les who just wants to be seen. Carl Betz gives a solid performance as Howard as does Diane McBain as Diana. Shelley Fabares (Cynthia) appeared in 3 films with Elvis and it’s clear the two have great chemistry together.
“Spinout” is available on Movie Zyng and other online retailers.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? The Panavision film has been given a stunning restoration. The bright colors from the 60’s attire really pops here. This is easily one of the best looking discs from Warner Archive in the past few months.
Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the roar of the Fox 5 engine to Elvis belting out a tune, this 2.0 track is nothing short of lively.
Extras include a song selection option, an original theatrical trailer for “Spinout,” and 2 “Tom And Jerry” cartoons titled “Catty-Cornered” and “Filet Meow”
