Fast X Blu-ray Review

“Fast X” is a return to form for the long-running series.
In “Fast X,” Dominic Toretto and his ever-growing “family” become targeted by the vengeful son of Hernan Reyes named Dante Reyes. Dante proves to be the group’s most lethal foe yet as he sets traps for the team and always seems to be one step ahead of them. Worse still, Dante ends up framing Dom and co. for a bombing incident in Rome and later kidnaps his son.
After “The Fate Of The Furious” and “F9” proved to be among the franchise’s worst entries, it was starting to seem as if the Fast franchise was fading away creatively. Thankfully, “Fast X” shows that there is still life left in the series.
This time around Louis Leterrier steps into the director’s chair after some behind-the-scenes drama caused Justin Lin to step away (although he still co-wrote the script alongside Dan Mazeau). Leterrier really embraces the truly over-the-top nature of the action that has become part and parcel with the franchise. This is especially evident in the rolling bomb, dam, and car/helicopter sequences which are so outlandish that you can’t help but chuckle at and shake your head at all while having a big goofy smile plastered on your face.
Leterrier and action aside, it’s the new cast members here that revitalize the series. Jason Momoa carries this movie on his back and is far and away the best villain we have seen yet. The character is funny and deranged and Momoa just goes all in by giving a big performance. Alan Ritchson of “Reacher” fame is a welcome addition to the series as a member of the Agency named Aimes. Brie Larson plays Tess (Mr. Nobody’s daughter) and has some memorable scenes to be sure. Daniela Melchior (who stole “The Suicide Squad”) also shines as a street racer and new member of “the family.” In terms of the legacy characters, everyone gets their chance to shine from Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster on down, but for my money, it’s the 2 surprise cameos that make the biggest splash. No spoilers as to who they are.
In terms of the actual plot, it’s essentially a big set-up for the next movie that ends on huge cliffhangers. There’s some elements that fall flat (especially the Jakob and Little B road movie plot), but there’s so much action, Momoa scenery chewing and clever tie-ins to past sequels that you likely won’t care about any of the shortcomings…unless you’re bored of the series.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.39:1 2160p. How does it look? Expect a crystal clear transfer. Note: This title is also available on 4K.
Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? If you’re looking for a movie to use as a demo disc, this would be the one. It’s a perfect track in which the action sounds nothing short of explosive.
