Kandahar Blu-ray Review

“Kandahar” lacks substance.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, “Kandahar” is an action-thriller that revolves around an undercover CIA operative (Tom). After destroying an underground nuclear reactor, Tom’s CIA handler Roman attempts to set up a new mission for Tom and a translator (Mo), but when Tom’s cover is blown, Tom and Mo find themselves on the run from ISI Agent Kahil and Iranians. Tom and Mo’s only hope for survival is an extraction in Kandahar, but can they make it there alive?

From a general story perspective, there’s a lot going on in Mitchell LaFortune’s screenplay about spies, politics, Iranian culture, loss, traitors, and war, but unfortunately, all of those intriguing elements go to waste. Everything is set-up in a way that suggests “Kandahar” might actually be an intelligent adult thriller, but the movie drops all of the weighty plotlines in favor of stale action. Much of the screentime is simply devoted to Tom and Mo on the run in tired action set pieces involving bombs, helicopters, and a motorcycle. Moreover, there’s very little characterization here which really puts a damper on the proceedings. Sure, there’s some light exposition involving the core characters, but it’s all forced surface level characterization mostly involving family or dreams. You’re left wanting more from the entire film.

Speaking of the characters, Gerard Butler looks entirely bored here and it’s hard not to blame him. You’re better off watching 2023’s surprisingly fun action flick “Plane” instead for peak Butler. There are 2 notable performances here though from the always engaging Travis Fimmel as Roman and Navid Negahban who gives the most heartfelt and genuine performance as Mo.
