Book Club: The Next Chapter Blu-ray Review

“Book Club: The Next Chapter” is a forgettable sequel.

In this sequel to 2018’s “Book Club,” longtime friends Vivian, Sharon, Diane and Carol decide to head to Italy as a sort of bachelorette party for Vivian’s forthcoming wedding (although there might be more to the trip than meets the eye). While there, they see the sights in Rome, Venice, and Tuscany, but encounter a few unexpected detours along the way as well.

Directed by Bill Holderman and written by Holderman and Erin Simms, “Book Club: The Next Chapter” feels like little more than an excuse for the cast to take a scenic trip to Italy. While it’s refreshing to see films aimed at women of a certain age, the demographic (and this stacked cast) deserves so much more than this phony and slapped together story about friendship and romance. Granted, the demographic for this film might find this little comedic adventure more endearing than most, but it’s not likely to make much of an impression (if any) once the end credits roll.

As mentioned above, the cast is stacked with award winning talent that includes Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, Andy Garcia, Giancarlo Giannini, Craig T. Nelson, Don Johnson, and Hugh Quarshie. Sadly, most of the cast is phoning it in (and it looks pretty clear that Bergen is actually reading cue cards). The only ones who seem to be trying here are Mary Steenburgen and Giancarlo Giannini as an Italian Police Chief that seems to conveniently be everywhere.
