Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret Blu-ray Review

“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is one of 2023’s best films.
2023’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is a film adaptation of Judy Blume’s classic book of the same name. The 1970 set revolves around the life of the titular 11 year girl who is undergoing a great deal of change. She moves from New York to New Jersey with her parents, she’s away from her grandmother (whom she is close with), she makes new friends, she questions her own religious beliefs, she develops a crush on a guy (Moose) and is starting to experience puberty.
Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is one of those perfect adaptations where all the stars align. Not only is it a great coming-of-age story about a young girl, but it’s a deep and thoughtful story about religion, change, puberty, family, and childhood. It perfectly encapsulates the often confusing feelings of youth and digs deep into the honest and uncomfortable truths of life in ways you don’t often see in cinema. It may be set in the past, but it feels as relevant as ever. To say Kelly Fremon Craig nailed it is an understatement.
You can’t ask for a better cast to make the story come alive. Abby Ryder Fortson (best known for playing a young Cassie in the first 2 Ant-Man films) gives one of the great child actor performances (no exaggeration). The narrative rests entirely on her shoulders and the talented young actress guides the movie with the ease of a longtime pro. Between the expert narration and the internalized emotions, Abby deserves some awards recognition. Other stand-outs include Rachel McAdams as Margaret’s mother Barbara who has her own arc in this story. Kathy Bates also shines as the lonely grandmother Sylvia. Really though, everyone is fantastic in their respective roles. Casting department gets an A+ for their work to be sure.
