National Lampoon’s Vacation 4K UHD Review

“National Lampoon’s Vacation” is a comedy classic.
In 1983’s “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (the first installment in the franchise), the Griswold family (Clark, Ellen and their two children Rusty and Audrey) venture from Chicago to Los Angeles for a vacation to the Walley World theme park. Unfortunately, everything that could go wrong does including a car crash and the death of an Aunt and a dog.
“National Lampoon’s Vacation” is one of those movies where all the stars align. It’s directed by one of the premiere comedy filmmakers in Harold Ramis, it’s written by the legendary John Hughes, it stars Chevy Chase at the top of his game, the dialogue is endlessly quotable, and the comedy just flat out works from start to finish. On top of that, this is just an all too relatable comedy about a family vacation that goes awry. We’ve all been there. Yes, this one is perhaps more exaggerated than most (to put it mildly), but this is a fictional movie after all.
As mentioned above, Chevy Chase is in peak form here with one of his best film roles, but really, everyone is great here. Anthony Michael Hall is the best Rusty, Beverly D’Angelo is criminally underrated as Ellen, Dana Barron is a memorable Audrey, John Candy steals every scene he’s in as the security guard Russ, Imogene Coca shines as Aunt Edna, Christie Brinkley is unforgettable as the girl in the Ferrari, and Randy Quaid is amusing as Cousin Eddie (although he’s at his best in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”).
