Big George Foreman Blu-ray Review

“Big George Foreman” is a standard biopic.
As one might expect, “Big George Foreman” is a biopic of boxing great George Foreman. The story chronicles his life from 1960 growing up in a poor household to his miraculous comeback as a boxer in the 90’s. In between all of that are stories about his time in the Job Corps, the gold medal win in the Olympics, his pro boxing career, his family, his faith and transition into becoming a preacher, the youth center he started, his financial woes, his womanizing, and yes, even the iconic grill gets a mention.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and written by Tillman Jr. and Frank Baldwin, “Big George Foreman” (also known as “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World”) is a cut and dry biopic that does a disservice to the extraordinary life of the titular sports legend. Like many biopics these days, this one merely races through his life with the aid of narration. George Tillman Jr. doesn’t bring any real style or substance to the heavy handed biopic as he relies heavily on all too familiar tropes of sports movies, biopics/biodramas, and faith based movies. The film is at its best when it focuses on his boxing career. Outside of that, it just feels like a TV movie on auto-pilot for an overlong 129 minute runtime. It’s a shame because Foreman has an incredibly interesting life both in and out of the ring. The story about his mid-life boxing comeback is truly one of the most amazing stories in the boxing realm.
The cast keeps the movie afloat. Khris Davis does a commendable job transforming himself into George Foreman. He’s especially engaging inside the ring. Forest Whitaker classes up the motion picture with a key supporting role as George’s mentor/coach Doc Broadus. Even though the movie is about George Foreman, Sullivan Jones steals every scene he is in as Muhammad Ali.
