Insidious 4K UHD Steelbook Review

“Insidious” is one of the best horror films of the past 15 years.

Written by Leigh Whannell, “Insidious” finds Josh and Renai Lambert moving into a new home with their children. What should have been a fresh new start turns into a nightmare when the couple’s son Dalton encounters an entity and winds up in a coma. Even more disturbing things begin to happen which causes the family to move again. It turns out, however, that the house wasn’t the issue, but that Dalton himself is being haunted. Who or what is haunting him and for what reason? You’ll have to see for yourself.

With the release of “Insidious: The Red Door” on the horizon, Sony has put out a new 4K edition of director James Wan’s modern classic horror film. Revisiting the eerie movie all these years later, the first “Insidious” still gets under your skin. Between the chilling atmosphere and genuinely freaky imagery, Wan reinvents the haunted house movie with a real twist. Sure, there’s a real “Poltergeist” influence here, but the film is loaded with originality. On top of that, “Insidious” boasts some of THE best jump scares. Jump scares can be a cheap ploy in a lot of horror flicks, but Wan knows how to do it right. These scares are actually scary and they stick with you (which is what a good horror film should do).

Spooky elements aside, the cast is note perfect. The Lambard family characters are well developed (with Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne turning in quality performances), Lin Shaye gets the role of a lifetime as Elise, Barbara Hershey shines as Lorraine and Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson steal the movie as the paranormal investigators Specs and Tucker.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.40:1  2160p . How does it look? This is a nice upgrade that offers up a much more refined image quality.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? This new audio track is nothing short of dynamic. Joseph Bishara’s unnerving score never sounded so good.

Extras:
* Blu-ray copy
* Digital copy
* “Insidious” trailer on the 4K
* Archival extras on the Blu-ray- Sony trailers, “Horror 101: The Exclusive Seminar” (about horror storytelling), “On Set With Insidious” (a look at life on the set), and “Insidious Entities” which covers the entities/monsters in the film.
