One Ranger Blu-ray Review

Not even Thomas Jane can help “One Ranger.”

Written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson, “One Ranger” is a modern western/action movie that is no doubt trying to ride the coattails of the success of “Yellowstone” to a degree. Anyway, the story involves a Texas Ranger (Alex) who becomes roped into helping British Intelligence track down an Irish bank robber/terrorist named Declan who may be plotting an attack on British soil.

Why does British Intelligence need the help of a lone Texas Ranger? It’s beyond me, but that’s the movie we are saddled with here, folks. Logic isn’t the script’s strong suit. In fact, the lifeless script doesn’t really have a strong suit. It’s all just set-up for action and shootouts (many of which contain CGI bullets and blood). It’s a cheap, lazy movie that is an auto-pilot for much of the runtime. Sure, it tries to create a hybrid America meets England story, but it does so little with the concept. It’s mostly just good guys chasing bad guys.

Action wise, there are some decent hand to hand combat scenes, but none of them are worth wading through this movie for.

Obviously, Thomas Jane and John Malkovich are the selling points here. Jane knows the movie is bad and generally looks bored throughout the proceedings. The veteran actor certainly makes a choice with the character’s gruff voice. It’s almost like a cartoon western character. At the very least, it’s the most engaging thing about the movie. Likewise, Malkovich also takes a bold swing with his character’s bizarre speech pattern as well. He’s not in the movie much, but seeing Malkovich and Jane on screen together is about as entertaining as this movie gets.
