Warriors Two Blu-ray Review

“Warriors Two” is among Sammo Hung’s best films.

Written and directed by Sammo Hung, “Warriors Two” is a 1978 Golden Harvest martial arts film. The story concerns Change-Giver Wah overhearing a discussion involving Bank owner/Crime Boss Mok wanting to murder the current Mayor of Foshan so that he can take his place. Mok’s minions get wind of Change-Giver Wah hearing their plan and attempt to kill him and his mother. His mother tragically winds up dead, but he is saved by Fat Chun. Knowing that Wah wants to get even with Mok, Chun tries to convince his Wing Chun expert Master Tsan to teach Chun, but will that be enough to stop the power hungry Mok and his men?

“Warriors Two” is sort of a story of two movies. On one hand you have a dramatic story about Wing Chun training, murder and the villainous Mok. On the other hand, you have helpings of dopey comedy that is ever present in Sammo Hung’s films and characters. “Warriors Two” is at its best when it is more serious and focuses on the characters of Change-Giver Wah and Master Tsan. The training sequences and most of the fights in the final 20 minutes are particularly rewarding (especially Master Tsan’s fight with a bear trap on his leg). When the cartoonish antics are on screen (see the final battle between Fat Chun and Advisor Yau for reference and all of the tired overweight jokes), it’s less engaging. Some people may find much joy in the comedic side of martial arts movies, but unless it is done extremely well (which is rare), the more serious and dramatic martial arts films tend to be much more satisfactory to me at least.

Even with the goofy comedy, this is still one of Sammo Hung’s better films and performances. The bond between Fat Chun and Wah works well here and is in many ways the heart of the movie. Casanova Wong and Sammo Hung have superb on screen chemistry whether they’re conversing or fighting. Bryan Leung also makes a lasting impression as the ultra skilled Master Tsan.

Note: I reviewed a screener copy of this Blu-ray. The Blu-ray contains the Hong Kong Theatrical Cut and the International Export Cut.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? This is a nice crisp upgrade that features richer colors.

Audio Track: Cantonese, Mandarin and English 1.0 and English 5.1. How do they sound? The Cantonese track may not be of the highest quality but it’s likely the go track for most. The Mandarin track sounds too low. The English 1.0 track is passable while the English 5.1 track has the most depth if you opt to go with a dub.

Extras:
* Commentary by Frank Djeng and Robert “Bobby” Samuels.
* An interview star Leung Kar-yan.
* Cantonese and English trailers for “Warriors Two.”
* Image gallery
* “The Way Of The Warrior: The Making Of Warriors Two”- A 2005 archival documentary that contains interviews with those involved including Sammo Hung.
