65 Blu-ray Review

“65” is better than the reviews suggest.

In “65,” the story revolves around a father/husband (Mills) on the planet Somaris who embarks on a space expedition in order to earn money for his daughter Nevine’s illness. His trip goes wildly off track when the ship (the Zoic) crashes due to contact with asteroids. Mills finds himself on an unknown planet which happens to be Earth at the time of dinosaurs. He initially believes he is the sole survivor, but he meets a young girl named Koa who doesn’t speak the same language. Mills discovers that the Zoic’s shuttlecraft is still operational, but it will require him and Koa traversing a very dangerous terrain that is loaded with not so friendly dinosaurs. Worse still, something just might be threatening Earth too (you can probably guess what that is).

Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (best known as the writers of “A Quiet Place”), “65” is a basic, straight-forward sci-fi film that was unfairly maligned. Does it bring anything new to the table? No, but it’s short, intense, and better than any of the Jurassic World movies by a longshot. At the end of the day, Beck and Woods created an entertaining sci-fi survival tale that delivers plenty of exciting dino action, a “Twilight Zone” esque plot at the center, and, most importantly, character. That’s more than enough.

On the surface, “65” seems like an odd project for Adam Driver who is arguably one of the best actors in the business. With that said, he really commits to the role. It might not be the most challenging part, but it’s a very physically demanding role. Plus, the movie relies heavily on his shoulders as he is sometimes the only human on screen. Driver does share the screen with the talented and frankly underrated Ariana Greenblatt (who was excellent in “Love And Monsters”). Greenblatt and Driver have superb chemistry together and it is their dynamic that elevates the film as a whole. Without it, it’s just another disposable sci-fi film with action set pieces.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a crisp transfer (especially the exterior scenes).

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The action sounds explosive with this dynamic 5.1 track.
