The Age Of Shadows Blu-ray Review

AOS

“The Age Of Shadows” deserves more attention.

2016’s “The Age Of Shadows” is a South Korean spy thriller that is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The story revolves around a group of resistance fighters working towards independence and a Korean police captain (Lee Jung-Chool) who is collaborating with the Japanese to stop the resistance. After a resistance fighter and former friend of Lee’s is killed, Lee begins to question his loyalty and ponders helping the resistance who are looking to buy explosives from China. How does it all pan out? You will just have to watch and see.

“The Age Of Shadows” is one of those movies that excels across the board. The production values and sets are first rate, the direction by Kim Jee-Woon is stylish and taut, the action is deeply intense, and the acting is fantastic (especially by Song Kang-ho as Lee Jung-Chool). Truth be told, there’s nothing I can knock the film for. It’s a 140 minute film filled with spies, sneaking, informants, intel gathering, characters tracking one another, impactful violence, and thrilling scenes (the entire train sequence is masterfully done). Just see it.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? The dark and stylish cinematography shines in 1080p.

Audio Tracks: Korean and English 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How do they sound? Skip the bad English dub and go with the original language Korean track.

Extras include trailers for 5 other CJ Entertainment titles, 5 minutes interviews with cast members talking about their characters and so forth and an interview with director Kim Jee-Won.
