Every Secret Thing DVD Review

Every Secret Thing DVD

“Every Secret Thing” feels more like an episode of a police procedural than a movie.

After being jailed for 7 years as minors for allegedly murdering a baby, Alice and Ronnie are released back into the world again. Upon release, a new missing child case is being investigated by Detective Porter and Jones. As their investigation deepens, the two Detectives look into Ronnie and Alice’s lives. Is one or both of them up to no good again? Were both of them guilty of murder for the crime 7 years prior? Are the two cases connected? You’ll have to see for yourself.

Even though “Every Secret Thing” is an engaging and unsettling mystery movie that offers up a few plot twists, there’s not much here to differentiate it from the average TV cop show and or mystery TV movie. The film (which is based on the novel by Laura Lippman) is a fairly standard “people with dark secrets” drama. This one just happens to have a more high profile cast.

On the subject of the cast (which is comprised of Elizabeth Banks, Diane Lane, Common, and Dakota Fanning), their acting talent truly elevates the movie. Banks and Lane in particular really deliver the most layered performances here. The only cast member that feels a bit out of place is Danielle Macdonald who is a bit uneven as the creepy Alice. While I can see what she was attempting to do, it didn’t quite come off as well as she may have intended on screen.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1. How does it look? Despite the funky lighting of the movie, this DVD offers up a fine transfer.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? While not great the 5.1 track does the job.

The only extras are Anchor Bay trailers and 7 minutes of deleted scenes.
