Blood Glacier DVD Review
“Blood Glacier” is barely a step above a SyFy creature feature.
Set in a remote German Alps climate research base, “Blood Glacier” revolves around 3 scientists, a technician, a dog, as well as a group of visitors (led by the Environmental Minister and her entourage) that arrive later in the story. The primary story involves the core group of characters facing off against various vicious hybrid creatures that have apparently come into contact with a mysterious blood glacier. To say any more would be spoiling the plot.
From the title and cover art, one might expect “Blood Glacier” to be a SyFy channel film, but surprisingly, it is not. This Toronto International Film Festival selection was actually distributed by IFC Midnight. Why the famed indie film company picked this title up, however, is a real mystery. Despite having an interesting “Alien” and “The Thing” esque concept, “Blood Glacier” is a poorly executed monster movie. From the cheap looking practical monsters and the unoriginal story elements to the stiff characters and groan worthy coincidental character meeting between Janek and his ex, “Blood Glacier” is not worth your time.
Perhaps the only aspect of this film that is remotely entertaining is actress Brigitte Kren (who portrays the Minister). Mind you, her performance is not good at all. In fact, it’s quite possibly one of the most comically bad acting performances I have seen in awhile. Just watch her reaction shots and the scenes where she yells at other characters for reference.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.35:1. How does it look? The film is visually impressive thanks to some first rate location shooting.
Audio Tracks: English and German Dolby Digital 5.1. How do they sound? Stick with the original language track because the English dub is atrocious.
The only extras include IFC film trailers and a “Blood Glacier” trailer.
