Locke and Key: Alpha and Omega Graphic Novel Review
“Locke and Key: Alpha and Omega” delivers a satisfying conclusion.
Whether you are prepared for it or not, ‘Alpha and Omega’ marks the end of Joe Hill’s “Locke and Key” comic book series. Now, I wouldn’t dare spoil anything that happens in this sixth graphic novel volume, but I will say that readers and fans can expect to see Bode, Dodge, the Black Door, the Locke family, keys, Rufus, and a Prom party. I realize that’s not much to go on, but I think we all know that this series works best knowing as little as possible. I also realize that if none of this makes any sense to you, you probably shouldn’t be reading this review.
So, I’m sure the question that is on everyone’s mind is “Does Joe Hill stick the landing?” In short, absolutely. While the events that transpire in ‘Alpha’ may not be as elaborate or crazy as some fans may have imagined, this final story arc still wraps up storylines in a satisfactory manner. Instead of merely focusing on the fantasy, mystery and horror elements, Joe Hill wisely focuses on the characters because, at the end of the day, this was also a character centric comic book series. Each of the remaining characters (and there’s a lot of them) get their moment in the sun here as we (the reader) learn about their fates. It’s an emotional and heartfelt finale to be sure, but I think fans will be glad to get some much needed closure and not a “The Sopranos” esque ending (even though I personally loved that conclusion).
Overall Thoughts: Writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez have created something very special with “Locke and Key.” In fact, I’d rank ‘Locke’ as one of the all-time greatest comic book series (and I don’t say that lightly). With the intricate storylines, the fully developed characters, and the breathtaking and detailed art by rising star Gabriel Rodrguez, “Locke and Key” was simply an enthralling, gripping, and addicting comic book series. I’m sure I’m not alone in mourning the end of this series, but all good things must come to an end (as the saying goes). One thing is for certain though; I will miss this universe dearly. I can only hope Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez team up again in the not too distant future.
