Smash Up: Science Fiction Double Feature Expansion Set Review

Smash Up- Science Fiction Double Feature Expansion Set

“Science Fiction Double Feature” will undoubtedly delight “Smash Up” fans.

“Science Fiction Double Feature” is the third in a presumably long line of expansion sets for the popular card game “Smash Up.” In this small box set, buyers get a newly revised instruction booklet, eight 5 point tokens, twenty 1 point tokens, 8 new base cards, and four new 20 card decks that gamers can mix and match with previously released decks.

One of the new decks features Cyborg Apes (yes, you read that right). The cards here are comprised of handy power ups, extra actions, and action blockers. If played with the right deck, this Cyborg Apes will be able to do some serious damage and rack up base points.

Next up is the Super Spies deck which provides players with extra action cards, the ability to peek at cards in your deck, extra card draws, discarding capabilities, and the ability to control or destroy minions. While lacking in the power department, the Spies could be lethal when paired with a high power deck (especially with ability to peek at cards in your deck).

The third option here is the Time Travelers. With this sci-fi centric deck, you can bring discarded minions to your hand, place discarded cards back into your deck, play extra cards, replay cards, and return opponent’s cards to their hand. This deck has a lot of upside with the ability to retrieve discarded cards and replaying cards.

Last, but not least there is the Shapeshifters deck which is arguably the most powerful of the four. In fact, some may say it’s a bit too powerful in comparison to the other three. With the shifters, you can power up minions, mimic minion’s abilities and powers, play extra minions, copy cards, and destroy minions. Truth be told, it’s a tough deck to play against and will require strategic deck combinations to combat.

Overall Thoughts: I think anyone who plays “Smash Up” will agree that more expansions are always welcome as they give the already addicting game more replay value. Pick up “Smash Up: Science Fiction Double Feature” and have a blast mixing in these new decks with the other great existing ones.
