Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Blu-ray Review

Paranormal Activity- The Marked Ones Blu-ray

“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” is the best sequel of the franchise thus far.

The plot: After an alleged witch (Anna) is found dead in the apartment complex that he lives in, high school grad Jesse and his pals Hector and Marisol decide to look into her suspicious death. Amidst their amateur investigation, strange things begin to happen to Jesse. Not only does he start displaying strange abilities and discover strange markings on himself, but he also begins to exhibit very un-Jesse like behavior. Can Hector and Marisol help Jesse or is he beyond help? Note: I could go into more detail about the plot, but I am being purposefully vague about the story as to avoid major spoilers.

After the haunting and enormously satisfying first “Paranormal Activity” film, the 3 following sequels turned out be rather underwhelming to say the least. Instead of trying something different, the sequels merely seem to up the scare quotient and rework the formula that made the first one such a smash hit. Thankfully, “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” (a spin-off of the franchise) bucks the trend by FINALLY digging into the mythology that the first film established. Again, I won’t get into too many details here, but PA fans can expect multiple connections to the first film as well as more demon and witch action.

Perhaps the most refreshing aspect here is the well rounded characters. Instead of using young kids or Katie as a plot device again, ‘Marked Ones’ has a wide variety of new personable characters ranging in age. Granted, none of these characters are going to become legends of the horror genre or anything, but it’s nice to see some characters who are fairly likable as opposed to many of the obnoxious characters prominently featured in previous installments.

Note: The Blu-ray disc contains the theatrical and unrated versions of “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.”

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? By now, viewers should know what to expect from found footage films visually. The style not the video quality is what counts here.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD. How does it look? Between the jump scares and the dialogue, this track delivers.

Extras:
* DVD copy and Digital HD copy.
* 7 deleted scenes.

Overall Thoughts: Even though the PA franchise isn’t quite as popular as it once was, fans should still give “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” a chance as it’s easily the best follow-up to the first film. Not only does it offer up many creepy moments, but it also sets up some potentially exciting ideas for future installments.
