I’m So Excited! Blu-ray Review
“I’m So Excited!” is subpar Pedro Almodóvar.
The plot: A flight to Mexico runs into trouble when it is discovered that the plane landing gear is malfunctioning. Since the plane isn’t able to land, the pilots, stewards, a psychic and group of oddball passengers attempt to make the best of their time since survival is not guaranteed. As you can probably guess, sex, drama, and hijinks ensue.
After dishing out 5 fantastic films in a row with “All About My Mother,” “Talk To Her,” “Bad Education,” “Volver,” and “Broken Embraces,” writer/director Pedro Almodóvar has stumbled a bit with the ugly “The Skin I Live In” and now 2013’s “I’m So Excited!”
Right out of the gate (pun intended), “I’m So Excited!” proves to be a light, fluffy, disposable sex comedy that never quite takes off (pun intended again). Sure, some of the ideas presented in ‘Excited’ are intriguing, but they’re lost amidst the bizarrely surreal world these characters inhabit and the flat jokes about farts, booze, psychic powers, and sex.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? ‘Excited’ is a strikingly colorful film that looks even better on Blu-ray.
Audio Track: Spanish 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This isn’t the best track around, but it’s perfectly adequate.
Extras:
* Sony trailers and a theatrical trailer for “I’m So Excited.”
* “Presenting I’m So Excited!”- Q&A sessions with Pedro Almodóvar and cast members. Discussions range from Bunuel, rehearsals, auditions, characters, etc.
* The 6 minute “Making I’m So Excited!” contains set footage, behind-the-scenes footage of Almodóvar directing, and film clips.
Overall Thoughts: While Almodóvar does have a past in making comedies, I have always found those to be his least interesting works. He’s better than the lighthearted fare like “I’m So Excited!” and I hope his next film is dramatically richer than this forgettable comedy.
