I Am Pusheen The Cat Book Review

“I Am Pusheen The Cat” is a charming and funny collection of comics.

If you’re an internet savy person (as most of us are these days), it’s likely that you have come across Pusheen at least once in your internet searches. Pusheen (the brainchild of author/illustrator Claire Belton) is a chubby and adorable grey female Tabby cat animated web comic character that has become an internet sensation. The character has become so popular, in fact, that it has essentially become a brand of its own (you can even find free Pusheen stickers on the Facebook chat now). After amassing legions of fans on the web, Claire Belton has decided to take her beloved creation to the page with a new Simon and Schuster book (“I Am Pusheen The Cat”) that collects new and classic Pusheen comics.

Throughout the 180 cutesy and colorful pages, readers will delve into 5 chapters titled “I Am Pusheen The Cat,” “Things You Should Know About Cats,” “How To Live,” “Stormy,” and “A Year In The Life Of Pusheen.” These comics tell of Pusheen’s sleeping positions, favorite foods, hobbies, and holiday celebration ideas. The chapters also give us “helpful” how to guides, DIY tips, uses for marshmallows, accurate information about cat behavior, and much more that I don’t want to spoil for you.

In typical Pusheen fashion, the comics rely heavily on illustrations to convey an idea or story. Each page (and chapter) is light on words as they are mainly used for descriptive and list purposes. Personally, I can’t imagine this comic being told any other way as this formula has proven to be successful and effective time and time again. A narrative story with Pusheen would simply be strange and awkward. Pusheen comics are meant to be quick and fun entertainment that puts a smile on your face and they certainly do that with both the web comics and this new book.
