Stuck In Love Blu-ray Review

Stuck In Love Blu-ray

“Stuck In Love” is a little seen gem.

The story: Bill is a novelist who is having trouble coping with the fact that his ex-wife (Erica) left him for a younger man. Not only can he not let her go, but his obsession with her gets in the way of his writing career. Bill’s son (Rusty) is a budding writer who is looking to live it up and perhaps pursue a relationship with a troubled fellow classmate (Kate). Bill’s daughter (Samantha) is a promiscuous college student as well as a newly published author. She claims she doesn’t want a relationship, but she begins to open up to a smart and kind hearted college student (Louis). Meanwhile, Erica is clearly unhappy in her new relationship and is heartbroken that her own daughter (Samantha) refuses to speak to her. Can this broken family reconcile? Will Bill’s children have happy relationships of their own?

When I received a review copy of “Stuck In Love,” I was shocked that I had never heard of this film before. You’d think a movie featuring Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins, Logan Lerman and Kristen Bell would have at least been promoted more, but alas no. It’s a real shame this film seems to have flown under the radar too as it’s one of those rare pleasant surprises.

If you read the above plot synopsis, there’s a chance that it probably didn’t grab your attention and I can’t say I blame you. Truth be told, the story sounds like a sappy romantic drama on paper. Thankfully, it’s not. Between the well written characters and the emotionally rewarding drama, “Stuck In Love” is a touching and involving story about the ups and downs of love, relationships,  writing, and family.

It doesn’t hurt that ‘Love’ boasts one of the best ensemble casts I have seen in 2013. Greg Kinnear delivers his usual solid performance as Bill while rising stars Lily Collins and Logan Lerman shine in what is arguably their best roles to date. Jennifer Connelly (who we have seen very little of since 2008) returns with a very heartfelt performance as Erica. Her final scene in particular is convincingly acted.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? Looks good to me.

Audio Track: Dolby TrueHD 5.1. How does it sound? Between the music and the dialogue, this is a sharp audio track.

Extras:
* A lighthearted commentary with Josh Boone and Nat Wolff. Nat talks about working with Lily Collins and set stories while Josh chats about many scenes that mirror his own life. Worth a listen.
* “The Making Of Stuck In Love” is a standard featurette that contains cast and crew interviews and character and story discussions.
* DVD copy.
* Millennium Entertainment trailers.

Overall Thoughts: I don’t know why “Stuck In Love” isn’t getting the attention it deserves because it’s a very well made drama. I recommend checking it out.
