My Amityville Horror DVD Review
“My Amityville Horror” is so thought provoking you could do a term paper on this movie.
No, “My Amityville Horror” is not a sequel or a remake to any of “The Amityville Horror” films. Instead, it’s a documentary about the alleged real life paranormal activities that the Lutz family experienced at the infamous home in Long Island, NY in 1975. More specifically, it’s about the son (Daniel Lutz) who was but a child when the news making events happened.
If you’re looking for answers as to whether or not the haunting was “real” or a hoax, you’re not going to get any here. Like his family members, Daniel stands by the fact that he saw such things as an abnormal amount of flies, moving objects, red eyes, strange smells, doors and windows opening and closing on their own, etc. Daniel also claims that George had telekinesis and that a possession took place. Whether or not he is telling the truth we will likely never know, but one thing is for sure, there’s some psychological trauma here. Throughout the interviews with Daniel, it’s clear that he is plagued by memories of whatever did happen. He’s trying to move on with his life and start anew with his family, but he harbors such paranoia and anger (especially towards his stepfather George and the notion of a lie detector test).
On the subject of George, he seems to be the most likely source of Daniel’s tragic issues. Between his stories about George being interested in the occult and his intense dislike for him, it’s quite possible that Daniel’s imagination just ran wild as he mixed fact and fiction in his stories about the events that transpired.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.78:1. How does it look? This is a very well shot documentary that boasts a unique style.
Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The music and dialogue sounds clear which is all you can really ask for from a documentary.
Extras:
* “My Amityville Horror” trailer.
* “Living With Amityville”- A featurette about the life of Daniel Lutz with some information about director Eric Walter.
* Commentary by director Eric Walter and producer Andrea Adams. An equally fascinating commentary that goes into further detail about the Lutz family, how the docu came about, the psychology of Daniel Lutz, and so forth.
Overall Thoughts: Was it a scam? Did the paranormal events come about by feeding off the negative energy of the family? Is the house peaceful? Is Daniel lying through his teeth? It’s all a big mystery which is what makes this documentary such a fascinating watch. Note: Keep an eye out for an appearance by real life paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren (of “The Conjuring” fame).
