2 Broke Girls Season 2 DVD Review
If you saw the first season of “2 Broke Girls,” you’ll know what to expect in season two.
In the 24 episode second season of the popular raunchy sitcom “2 Broke Girls,” the series continues the adventures of diner workers Max and Caroline. Plotlines involve: An auction of Caroline’s family possessions, a Cupcake Wars audition, Max and Caroline continuing to raise money for their cupcake business, Earl’s son, Martha Stewart, Han stopping a robbery at the diner, Caroline dating a candy store owner (Andy), a barn for Chetsnut (the horse), Max’s old flames, Sophie wanting a dream house, a cabin in the woods getaway, the opening of the cupcake shop, cupcake business complications (including rent money), a plane trip to the Grammys, Caroline being fired from the diner, relationship problems between multiple characters, an episode of “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” filming at the diner, and the season finale in which Max and Caroline literally stumble across a major business idea.
If you found yourself charmed or amused by “2 Broke Girls,” it’s safe to say you will dig the second season. Season 2 offers more of the same as Max and Caroline’s friendship (and partnership) continues to blossom as they crack raunchy jokes about testicles, urine, breasts, race, sex, and a whole lot more. With the amount of sexual innuendos, you’d think this show would be on cable, but it’s actually a CBS sitcom. In that respect, I have to give the creative staff some props for at least trying to push the boundaries of what can be on network TV. At the same time, the show is filled with racial stereotypes and otherwise brainless adult humor. The show constantly beats you over the head with repetitive jokes to the point of not being amusing anymore.
The only time the show changes at all here is in episode 10 when Max and Caroline FINALLY open their cupcake shop (even though they are still working at the diner). However, that whole plotline seems to be rather pointless as the season finale suggests the writers have found a way for the characters to have ALL of the action take place in the diner location thereby ensuring a way to keep all of the characters on the show.
As with season 1, cast members Kat Dennings and Garrett Morris are the only two who really keep the show afloat here. I’m still surprised at the fact that Kat Dennings decided to be on this show as she is far too talented to be stuck on a routine sitcom. Hopefully, we’ll see her back on the big screen doing other roles in the not too distant future.
Video/Audio:
The series, which is presented in widescreen, looks fine thanks to Fred Savage’s (yes, THAT Fred Savage) directorial work. From a visual standpoint, this sitcom simply looks better than your average sitcom which is a plus.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 does a solid job juggling the laugh track, dialogue, and music.
Extras:
* Deleted scenes from episodes 3, 4, 7, 16, 17, and 19.
* “2 Broke Girls At Paley Fest 2013”- Christina McLarty hosts this Q&A panel with Jennifer Coolidge, Jonathan Kite, Matthew Moy, Garrett Morris, Beth Behrs, Michael Patrick King, and Kat Dennings. The group talks about everything from bad jobs to auditioning.
* A mildy amusing gag reel.
* “2 Broke Girrllss! With Sophie Kachinsky”- A featurette on the Sophie character including an interview with Jennifer Coolidge and other cast members.
* “Max’s Homemade Cupcakes: Go Big Or Go Broke!”- A featurette about scripts, characters, jokes, etc.
Note: If you are eager to see more of “2 Broke Girls,” season 3 has just started airing on CBS.
