Adventure Time: Jake The Dad DVD Review
Another assortment of “Adventure Time” episodes hits DVD with the “Jake The Dad” release.
In this 16 episode set, fans get stories about: Jake becoming a father of 5 pups, the Flame Princess, Lumpy Space Princess doing research for a book, Jake getting mixed up in a trial meant for Magic Man, BMO looking for a sock, the villainous Mega Frog, Ice King and Marceline, miniature versions of the main characters, 5 characters mysteriously trapped in a dungeon, Earls of Lemongrab, short tales about the 5 tastes, the relationship between Finn and Flame Princess, Jake Jr., and BMO being kidnapped.
While I have never been a huge fan of the wacky oddity that is “Adventure Time,” I did find that “Jake The Dad” offered up a few better than average episodes. First and foremost, the title episode (“Jake The Dad”) was a clear highlight here as it showed character growth for both Jake and even Finn. Jake realizes his life is forever changed as he has someone (5 pups to be exact) to care for. He embraces his new role as a father and he will do anything for his children. Finn also shows some maturity here and realizes that Jake has a new life of his own now. Finn himself is even growing as a character as he forms a relationship with the Flame Princess. Heck, even the Ice King has some deep character moments in episodes like “I Remember You.” It was these type of character moments that captured my attention as opposed to the weird humor and even weirder side characters.
On the subject of weird side characters, I can’t for the life of me understand the appeal of the irritating BMO and Magic Man. The two feel like “Regular Show” rejects and their storylines distract from the core group of characters that fans tune in to see.
Video/Audio:
Presented in widescreen, “Adventure Time” looks as colorful and surreal as it ever has. With that said, why don’t they release these stand-alone discs on Blu-ray too? The fanbase is clearly rabid and would probably appreciate it.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track delivers clear sounding sound f/x and voice work, but this show deserves a 5.1 track (as do all shows).
Extras:
* A Jake hat (obviously one of the main selling points of this set).
* “Adventure Time,” “TheAmazing World Of Gumball,” “Scooby-Doo: Stage Fright,” and “Regular Show” ads.
* “Little Did You Know”- Textual information about Charlie, T.V., Viola, Kim Kil Whan and Jake Jr.
Summary: ‘Jake The Dad’ is worth picking up if you REALLY want the Jake hat. Otherwise, I’d suggest picking up one of the two season set releases instead as you get more for your dollar that way.
