6 Souls Blu-ray Review

6 Souls Blu-ray

“6 Souls” is a convoluted chore.

The plot: After a psychiatrist (Dr. Cara) is introduced to a strange patient (Adam/David) who suffers from an unusual case of multiple personality disorder, she becomes intrigued by him. After doing some research, she discovers that Adam/David is channeling people who were murdered. As confusion builds and dead bodies begin to mysteriously pop up, Dr. Cara seeks answers and discovers the truth involves past atrocities, soul sucking, religion, and voodoo.

What starts off as a mildly interesting psychological thriller soon turns into pure Hollywood hokum thanks to an absurd J-Horror wannabe script. Despite a sizable 22 million dollar budget and a big star in Julianne Moore, it’s not hard to see why “6 Souls” (AKA “Shelter”) sat on the shelf and was delayed for several years- the movie makes little to no sense. Writer Michael Cooney (who wrote the equally groan worthy “Identity” and the laughably bad killer snowmen flicks “Jack Frost” 1 and 2) gets lost in his own clumsy horror plot and seems to be just borrowing from other recent horror hits (complete with the open ended J-Horror ending). How or why this script managed to reach the shooting stage is the most terrifying aspect of the entire film.

As far as the cast goes, it’s sad to see Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in this film because it is so beneath their talents. Moore, who is undeniably one of the best modern actresses, looks completely bored here and you can tell that she knows the material is rubbish. Meyers seems to be having a little more fun here as he lets loose by playing different characters, but his odd accents and sometimes over-the-top acting are a little awkward.

Video/Audio:

“6 Souls,” which is presented in 2.35:1 1080p, has a rather bland visual style so the hi-def transfer isn’t likely to excite you. With that said, it’s still a solid transfer.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio track is effective. The movie starts out rather quiet, but it becomes louder as the coughing, yells, weird voices begin to pop up.

The only extras here are Anchor Bay trailers.

Summary: “6 Souls” is a supernatural dud.
