Todd and the Book of Pure Evil Season 2 DVD Review

Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil Season 2 DVD

The second season of “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil” doesn’t compare to the first season.

In case you’ve never heard of the Canadian import “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil,” it’s a heavy metal horror comedy in the vein of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” (only much more comedic and raunchy). The show revolves around 4 high schoolers (Todd, Chris, Hannah, and Jenny) trying to stop the wish granting book of pure evil from preying on (and destroying) the student body. The group also has to stop the evil guidance counselor Atticus who now leads the Satanic Society. As if that weren’t enough to deal with, Chris, Hannah and Jenny have to keep an eye out for Todd who is the alleged evil one that is prophesized to destroy the world.

In the 13 episode season 2, viewers can expect to see stories about Jenny’s dad, brainwashing, The Beast, a prehistoric Crowley High, the gang being trapped in a video game, an invisible perv, the gang being trapped in a thriller movie, a killer cake, the return of the Phantom of Crowley High, a house party, Jimmy the Janitor (wonderfully played by Jason Mewes), Todd traveling in time, and a big old cliffhanger ending.

When season 1 came out, I became a fan of “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil” early on. In addition to the show’s likable cast and characters (aside from the irritating Atticus played by Chris Leavins), ‘Todd’ was often a clever, funny, and downright bizarre spoof of high school life and horror entertainment. Unfortunately, it became apparent later on in season 1 and throughout all of season 2 that the series was more or less a one trick pony that relied heavily on a book victim of the week plot. The show’s second season even revists/retreads ideas from season 1 like “The Phantom of Crowley High” storyline.

As it turns out, the show’s second season would be the last which is probably for the best considering how much the show has fallen from grace. However, thanks to the fans of the cult show, this won’t be the last we see of these characters as enough funds have been raised on Indiegogo to create a wrap up animated movie titled “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil: The End of the End.” Whether or not the animated form will even work for ‘Todd’ remains to be seen, but fans looking for closure will at least get some with this project.

Video/Audio:

Presented in 1.78:1, ‘Todd’ doesn’t exactly have the highest production values, but it’s b-movie like style and f/x are part of the charm.

From the rockin’ music to the horror sound f/x, the Dolby Digital 5.1 delivers.

Extras:
* Talkative commentaries on “Simply The Beast,” “See You Later, Masturbator,” and “Black Tie Showdown” by a large amount of the cast and crew. The group joke around and chat about behind-the-scenes tidbits, gags in the show,
* Trailers for other E-One DVD/Blu-ray titles.
* 17 deleted and extended scenes.
* 4 extended musical numbers from episode 10.
* An amusing profanity laced 5 ½ minute blooper reel.
* “Special FX Bonus Material”- 3 behind-the-scenes featurettes on the 3 gruesome scenes from episodes 2 and 3.
* “In Memoriam: A Tribute To The Fallen Students Of Crowley High”- The title says it all.
* “Script To Screen Featurette”- A look at the production process from writing, pre-production, filming, color correction, music, etc.
* “Cast Q&A”- The cast members chat about their characters, their experiences on set, etc.
