Adventure Time Volume 4: Fionna and Cake DVD Review
The fourth volume of “Adventure Time” is a slight improvement over the previous volumes.
In the 16 episode fourth volume, there’s more of a variety of stories than usual. Plots include: Fionna and Cake get their own episode, Jake searching for a bedtime story, royal tart delivery, Finn becoming a Goblin king, a trip to the Land of the Dead, the Ice King, a wizard contest, Finn and friends starting a band (complete with musical numbers), zombies, a closet, an investigation of the death of the Ghost Princess, Jake and the Flame Princess, a Card Wars game, a bad cookie taking hostages, Finn and Jake missing, and Lemongrab.
As I have mentioned in past “Adventure Time” reviews, this series has to be one of the strangest out there. The show openly appeals to hipsters, stoners, and children (as it has often been said) and baffles others (like myself). Personally, I just don’t get what the fuss is about even after all of this time. Yes, it’s well animated (the environments at least) and the show’s adult humor and weird fantastical imagery is certainly imaginative, but I’m always left shrugging my shoulders after each episode is over. For the most part, I find the show to be incredibly loud and obnoxious. I can only take so many cheesy catch phrases and oddball characters before it becomes exhausting to watch.
On the plus side, I do think the fourth volume is the strongest to date. I like the fact that there ARE more adventures here and that several episodes (namely the musical and Fionna and Cake episodes) were a welcome departure from the usual formula.
On a side note, what is the story with the volume releases? Why not just release seasons 2, 3 and 4 in full on DVD already? It seems odd to release volume discs with a random assortment of episodes from seasons 2-4.
Video/Audio:
The series, which is presented in widescreen, is predictably very colorful. However, I still don’t understand why there has yet to be a Blu-ray release of this show considering how popular it is. The show would look infinitely better in hi-def.
Likewise, I’m surprised the DVD contains a mere Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track. This is a very loud and sound centric show that deserves a Dolby Digital 5.1 track.
The only extras include 4 “Adventure Time” ads and a text feature called “Little Did You Know” that gives information and facts about Fionna, Cake, Prince Gumball, Royal Tart Toter, Door Lord and Princess Cookie.
Summary: If you’re an “Adventure Time” fan who doesn’t want to wait for a season set, pick up this disc.
Note: The fifth season of “Adventure Time” is currently airing on Cartoon Network.
