Love Me Blu-ray Review

Love Me Blu-ray

While well acted, “Love Me” is strictly by the numbers.

“Love Me” begins with a woman named Melissa presumably being killed by an unknown assailant. The film jumps ahead three months and introduces us to a single high school woman (Sylvia) who is looking for love. To no surprise whatsoever, Sylvia soon finds love with a brooding, kindhearted loner named Lucas. In typical movie magic fashion, Lucas and Sylvia begin to fall for one another, but, of course, things can’t be that simple. Sylvia’s road to love is a rocky one as she discovers that Lucas had previously dated Melissa and is considered to be the prime suspect in her disappearance. Believing he is innocent, Sylvia tries to look past this fact, but soon begins to suspect him. Is Lucas guilty or is one of Sylvia’s friends or acquaintances responsible for Melissa’s alleged murder?

For a supposed thriller, “Love Me” isn’t very thrilling let alone suspenseful. Even the climactic ending is fairly uneventful and wraps up everything a bit too quickly. With tighter pacing, smarter cops, and perhaps a bit less of a made for TV vibe, “Love Me” could have been an intense little thriller about jealousy, heartbreak, love and murder. Instead, it all feels too slow paced and routine for it to work as a whole.

On the plus side, the performances are strong by the leads. Jamie Johnston and Lindsey Shaw impress as the lead characters Lucas and Sylvia. Their romance, however condensed and rushed it may be, manages to feel convincing thanks to their on-screen chemistry. The real highlight here, however, is Jean-Luc Bilodeau (of “Kyle XY” and “Trick ‘r Treat” fame) who plays Sylvia’s comic artist pal Harry. I’ve liked the underrated Bilodeau in everything I’ve seen him in and he further shows his acting range here as the most interesting character of the film.

Video/Audio:

Despite being a low budget flick, the film is well shot and it looks surprisingly sharp in 1.78:1 1080p.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track doesn’t have much going on other than a few music tracks and dialogue, but it does the job.

Extras:
* Anchor Bay film trailers.
* “Love Me: Behind The Scenes” contains set footage, film clips, and interviews with the cast talking about the film, characters, and plot.
* “Love Me: Stories From The Set” contains bloopers and the cast talking about amusing moments on set.

Summary: “Love Me” is nothing new, but it’s worth a rent.
