Metalocalypse Season 4 Blu-ray Review

“Metalocalypse” thinks it is funnier than it really is.

In the 12 episode fourth season, the members of Dethklok (Nathan Explosion, Skwisgaar Swigelf, Toki Wartooth, pickles and William Murderface) get into even more shenaningans. Viewers can expect to see plots about Nathan dating a crazed fan named Trindle, Dethklok’s new album(s), manager Charles Offdensen, an urban youth center, Dethfairs, Pickles and his mother, a feud between Toki and Skwisgaar, a new producer (Abigail), a Rock-A-Rooni Fantasy Camp, cosmetic surgery, sexual frustration, a DethSub, a dinner gone awry, the break-up of Dethklok, Mr. Salacia, Revengencers, Metal Masked Assassin, and Metalocalypse mythology.

Much like “Squidbillies,” “Metalocalypse” is one of the Adult Swim shows that I just can’t get into. I realize the cult show appeals to metal heads and fans of Adult Swim’s brand of humor, but to me, the show tries way too hard to be funny. Whether the writers are trying to push the envelope with shocking scenes of violence, sex and language or parodying obvious things about metal bands, it always feels like the writers are gloating about how funny they think they are. Most of the time, however, we are just subjected to awkwardly unfunny scenes of the dim witted, loud, egotistical, obnoxious band members arguing. It would be one thing if the characters were likeable, but I can’t say I like a single character outside of the narrator (played by Werner Herzog).

On the plus side, the show does delve into the mythology of the series more which is a tad more interesting than the usual Dethklok band feuds and ego trips.

Summary: If you liked the previous three seasons of “Metalocalypse,” you should like the fourth as it’s more of the same.

Video/Audio:

I’ll give “Metalocalypse” one thing, the show (which is presented in 2.4:1 1080p) is a cut above most Adult Swim shows animation wise. There is some real artistry at work here with the character models and lush, dark environments.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track will rock your face off via the music, dialogue, and sound f/x.

Extras:
* Ultraviolet Digital Copy.
* “Nathan Reads Shakespeare 4: A Comedy Of Errors”- Nathan attempts to record an audiobook version of Shakespeare’s “A Comedy Of Errors” but mostly he just rambles on and on and on.
* “Pickles Flyby”- Pickles flies around in a cube and comments on things he sees.
* “StaresDown” x 3. Skwisgaar and Toki have stare downs.
* “MurderThoughts”- Murderface lies on a bed and thinks about his face.
* “The Prophecy”- Werner Herzog narrates “The Prophecy” of Metalocalypse.
* “Dr. Rockzo’s Greatest Hits”- An ad for Dr. Rockzo’s greatest hits album.
