The Essential Games Of The Philadelphia Phillies DVD Review

Philly fans should snag “The Essential Games Of The Philadelphia Phillies”

With the Phillies fresh off of a disappointing 2012 season, it is the perfect time to revisit the highlights of the MLB club’s legacy with this 4 game set.

The first game here is the 1980 NLCS Game 5 Vs. the Houston Astros. If you are too young to have seen this club at this time period or want to see legends like Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Manny Trillo, Garry Maddox among others, this is a perfect classic game to witness. This 10 inning thriller against Nolan Ryan led them to the World Series (which they won that year).

Next up is the 1993 NLCS Game 6 Vs. the Atlanta Braves. I’m not sure this qualifies as one of their great games as the game was essentially over by the sixth inning, but it was an important game to be sure. With that said, it’s a fun victory to be sure and it’s always great to see players like Lenny Dykstra, Darren Daulton, John Kruk, and Dave Hollins in action. For those that don’t know, this victory led them to the World Series where they ultimately got trampled by the Toronto Blue Jays.

The third game on the set is the 2008 World Series Game 5 Vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. I don’t think there’s any question that this game belongs here as it was a World Series winning game. This game not only shows that the Phillies lived up to their potential (unlike the few years prior), but you also get to see great performances from Chase Utley, Brad Lidge, and Cole Hamels.

Last, but not least is the 2010 National League Division Series Game 1 Vs. the Cincinnati Reds. This game is all about celebrating Roy Halladay (who had a record year in 2010). This particular game featured Roy Halladay pitching a stunning no-hitter against the Reds that has to be seen to be believed.

Video/Audio:

The video quality varies here. The 1980 game is a bit rough looking, but the 08/10 games are crystal clear (even if they aren’t on a hi-def disc).

There are several audio tracks here. There’s a National TV Play-By-Play and Phillies TV Play-By-Play for the 1980 game, a Radio and TV Call for the 93 game, 08 English and Espanol TV broadcasts, Phillies Radio Network and Rays Radio Network audios for the 08 game and TV Play-By-Play and a Radio Call for the 2010 game. Audio varies depending on year, but you’ll hear the roar of the crowd and the excitement of the commentators to be sure.
