Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer Blu-ray and DVD Reviews
“Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer” is an entertaining film for the whole family.
Based on the book series by Megan McDonald, “Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer” is a live-action family film that revolves around a young girl (Judy) who is hoping to have an exciting summer for a change. Unfortunately, things don’t quite go her way when her parents and two best friends all leave on trips for the majority of summer. Stuck with her weird brother Stink and her quirky, accident prone Aunt Opal, Judy decides to try and have an eventful summer anyway by staging a contest with her friends to see who can score the most “Thrill Points” via cool activities. From there on out, Judy sets off on adventures that lead her to create odd art, watch monster movies, and even search for Bigfoot.
With the enormous popularity of animated films in the past 15 years, live-action children’s/family films aren’t as common as they used to be. After the success of “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid,” however, studios are trying to cash in on that success by green-lighting similar live-action family films. Enter “Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer,” a charming, colorful family film that is engaging enough to keep both the children and adults entertained.
With many live-action family films, it can be a chore for adults to sit through them. However, this odd-ball comedy is filled with strange animations, a sing-along, daydreams, pop-ups, some gross-out moments, and weird adventures that will make the run time go by in a flash. It also helps that star Jordana Beatty shines as the title character. Her charismatic and energetic performance is impressive and it’s clear this young actress seems to enjoy acting. Something tells me we will be seeing her again on the big (or small) screen in the near future.
On the subject of acting, I have to say I enjoyed seeing Jaleel White (Urkel from “Family Matters”) show up as a teacher. It’s nice to see that he is keeping busy these days and he actually does a good job with his limited role.
Summary: Even though it bombed at the box office and wasn’t critically acclaimed, kids (and perhaps even families) should have fun watching “Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer”.
Video/Audio:
The picture quality on the DVD is surprisingly slightly better than the 1080p picture quality on the Blu-ray disc. The problem with the Blu-ray is that the colors are a little too bright and overexposed whereas the colors on the DVD look as if they are at the right levels.
The DVD disc has a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track which does a good job juggling the wide variety of sounds (this is a very busy movie). The DTS-HD 5.1 audio track on the Blu-ray disc is a much livelier track than the Dolby Digital 5.1 track.
Extras on the DVD and Blu-ray:
* Fox trailers including a theatrical trailer for “Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer.”

* 2 deleted scenes.
