Dragon Ball Z Kai Part 6 Blu-ray Review

“Dragon Ball Z Kai” part 6 is another action-packed batch of episodes.

In episodes 66-77, the battle against the androids rages on as Goku and the Z fighters find a way to stop him. Unfortunately for the show’s heroes, the androids are not the only enemy as the villainous Cell makes his grand entrance in this sixth set. Other storylines include: a time machine, Kami and Piccolo merging to form a new Namekian, training, fights between Piccolo, the androids, and later Cell, Cell trying to reach perfect form, Cell trying to absord the androids, and characters turning Super Saiyan.

While often overlooked by DBZ fans, I’m quite fond of the Cell Saga as it was a nice spin on the villain formula. Instead of seeing a villain resurrected AGAIN, I liked the concept of having a villain that has all of the attributes of the world’s greatest fighters. Not only does this provide a challenge for the Z Fighters, but it makes for a dangerous foe. What’s even more appealing is that the Android and Cell sagas overlap which makes for some truly engaging sequences between the villains.

On the downside, I have to say I was a tad bit disappointed by the ‘Kai’ episodes here as it feels like more scenes could have been truncated. In particular, it seemed like Trunks and Vegeta were training for far too long here and that was something that should have been edited down for pacing purposes. It’s a minor quibble, but it was still kind of strange to see the lack of edits in this batch of episodes.

Summary: If you own the first 5 ‘Kai’ sets, you will no doubt want to pick up the sixth set. Recommended.

Video/Audio:

As with the previous 5 releases, the fullscreen 1080p picture quality never ceases to amaze me. Even with the dirt specs and slightly jumpy frame at times, I’m still amazed at how much they have cleaned up the prints and how much more colorful the animation looks.

This set contains English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0. The English track is fantastic as per usual. The action sounds better than ever and even the dialogue sounds crisper. The Japanese track is good, but it’s not as exciting as the 5.1 track. However, purists will definitely be pleased by the original language track regardless.

Extras:
* Trailers for “Trigun: Badlands Rumble,” “Yu Yu Hakusho,” “Sgt. Frog,” “Spice And Wolf,” “Soul Eater,” “One Piece,” “Kenichi,” “The Slayers,” and Funimation.com.
* Textless opening and closing songs.
