Sgt. Frog Season 3 Parts 1 and 2 DVD Reviews

“Sgt. Frog” continues to deliver plenty of laughs in the season 3 parts 1 and 2 DVD sets.

If you couldn’t get enough of your favorite attempting to invade Earth frogs (Keroro, Giroro, Tamama, Kululu, and Dororo), you will be glad to know that there are more adventures to be had with these goofy characters in the season 3 parts 1 and 2 DVD sets. In season 3 part 1 (which contains episodes 52-65), plots involve a destructive kero ball, Tamama, an investigation of Earth’s wonders (like Pyramids), the return of Angol Mois (“the destroyer of Earth”), Fuyuki acting as a detective, Dororo, the bad-ass Giroro, a fish flag, a tennis challenge, a bird nest, a new Viper, a giant sized Keroro, a vending machine, a castle, a “Speed Racer” esque race, a supernatural loving transfer student, summer activities, Keroro’s dad, a dryer, and a character named Karara.

In season 3 part 2 (which contains episodes 66-78), viewers can expect to see episodes involving a swimming pool, Natsumi and Koyuki out and about, Fuyuki and Momoka investigating a haunted place, a video game invention, a house renovation, Dororo, a “Spirited Away” parody, a comedy contest, an invasion simulation, a mini Earth, a chef competition, a beetle, fireworks, Momoka, a Moon resort, Tamama’s admirer, and treasure.

If you enjoyed the first two seasons, then you know what to expect with season 3. There’s more clever pop culture references (about everything from “Shaft” and “King Kong” to video games and social networking), more clever episode titles, clever sight gags, and more clever parodies (such as “Spirited Away” and “Iron Chef”). The two things that really keep me coming back for more, however, are the the narrator and Keroro.

The narration in this series never ceases to make me laugh. How can you not be amused when the narrator says “It looks like the frogs are finally going to takeover Earth. I better call my mother. And bring the dog outside” or “Everyone looks so cute when they are asleep…except my uncle Walter. He has night terrors and a glass eye”?

As for Keroro, he is far and away the best character on the series. He may be a foolish, self-loving screw up jerk with plans doomed for failure, but he’s still somehow very quick witted and can dish out insults at lightning speed.

Summary: If you have already picked up the first two seasons, there’s no reason not pick up season 3 parts 1 and 2. One might think the series would wear out its welcome by this point, but it’s still as funny, fresh and entertaining as it ever was. Recommended.

Video/Audio:

The fullscreen picture quality is fine, but I wish this series was in widescreen and not fullscreen.

The sets contain English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Japanese Stereo audio tracks. As I’ve stated before, the English track is one of the best around thanks to a stand-out voice acting cast. The Japanese track is good too but the narration and Keroro voice acting isn’t as memorable as the English track’s voice actors in my opinion.

Season 3 Part 1 Extras:
* Trailers for “Baka and Test” and “One Piece.”
* Textless opening and closing songs.

Season 3 Part 2 Extras:
* Trailer for “One Piece,” “Spice And Wolf,” “Soul Eater,” “Kenichi,” “Chobits,” “Excel Saga,” “Baka and Test,” “Ah! My Goddess,” “Dragon Ball Z,” and Funimation.com.
* Textless opening and closing songs.
