Zen: Vendetta/Cabal/Ratking Blu-ray Review

“Zen” is a snooze.

Taking a “Sherlock” like approach, “Zen” is a British television series that consists of 3 90 minute episodes. The series (which is based on a popular book series by Michael Dibdin) revolves around Detective Zen (Rufus Sewell) as he investigates a murder by an ex-con, a  triple homicide case, the dangerous Cabal organization, and a kidnapped industrialist. Other subplots include a romance with a married woman named Tania, gangsters, and politics.

As someone who is burnt out on seeing police/detective series, this didn’t do much to change my mind. “Zen” is your typical mystery/detective show with a lead detective that often lands himself in trouble and also has the usual strained relationships with his fellow co-workers. Basically, you’ve seen it all before.

One would think that the Rome backdrop would prove to be an interesting setting as compared to other shows in this genre, but alas the dreary and slow paced stories are likely to put you to sleep more than keep you glued to the TV.

Summary: “Zen” is strictly for fans of the police/mystery genre.

Video/Audio:

The widescreen 1080i picture quality is the best part of this set. The stunning Rome cinematography is done justice by the hi-def picture.

The only audio track option here is a Dolby Digital Stereo track. As you can imagine, it sounds flat. I think consumers have come to expect a certain standard for sound quality on Blu-ray and this isn’t it.

Extras:
* “Sherlock” and “Hamlet” trailers.
* “Zen: An Italian Adventure”- A making of featurete that contains interviews and discussions about the characters, the books, the stories, Italy, acting, etc.
