Minnesota Twins: 1991 World Series Collector’s Edition DVD Review
Minnesota Twins fans will undoubtedly love reliving the amazing 1991 World Series.
From the American League, there’s the impressive Minnesota Twins team that featured the likes of Kirby Puckett, Chili Davis, Jack Morris, Rick Aguilera, and Scott Erickson. From the National League, you had fantastic pitching from legends John Smoltz and Tom Glavine and some heavy hitting by David Justice. In the 1991 World Series, these two teams would face off, but who would come out the victor?
The Twins came out strong in game one with a fairly effortless win. Game two turned out to be a bit of an uphill battle, but the Twins managed to pull out their second win thanks to a homerun in the eighth inning by Scott Leius. Just as it was starting to look grim for the Braves, they manage to bounce back in game four in a 4 hour 12 inning affair in which David Justice manages to beat the catcher to the plate with the scoring run. Game four was another down-to-the-wire victory for the Braves as a sacrifice fly causes the Braves to get ANOTHER slide to the plate winning run at the bottom of the ninth inning. Momentum appeared to be going the Braves way in the fifth game as they hammered the Twins 14-5.
Game 6 saw a chance for the Braves to win it all, but in typical fashion for this series, it went down-to-the-wire yet again. In the bottom of the eleventh inning, Kirby Puckett hits a homer to win the game 4-3 and, more importantly, tie up the series 3-3.
In the 7th and final game, it was clear that no one knew who was going to win it all. After all, the series had been so back and forth. Game 7 turned out to be an epic pitching duel between John Smoltz and Jack Morris. It was so epic that the game went to extra innings with a 0-0 score. So who would be the hero that would win it all? Gene Larkin. He hit a scoring single which led the Twins to win the series. For Twins fans, you can’t ask for a more exciting ending. For Braves fans, it was one of many heartbreaking defeats in their club history.
Summary: If you’re an old school Twins fan who wants to re-watch this gripping World Series or a new Twins fan who wants to see the team in its glory days, I can’t recommend this set enough. This is baseball at its very best.
Video/Audio.
My one complaint with these World Series set releases is the fact that there is that they have not been digitally restored. I suppose many purists prefer that they look the way they did when they originally aired which I do understand. Anyway, the fullscreen picture quality does indeed look like it did upon its initial airing in 1991 (which is to say it has a faded color, pre hi-def look).
There a two Dolby Digital Stereo audio track options here. The first is the TV Play-By-Play and the second is the Twins Radio Network. The safe bet is to go with the Twins announcers as I found the TV announcers to be a bit bland at times.
