Sgt. Frog Season 2 DVD Review

Season 2 of “Sgt. Frog” is as funny as the first season.

Everyone’s favorite Earth invading frogs (Keroro, Giroro, Dororo, Kululu and Tamama) are back for another season. This time, however, episode plots involve hot springs, a “Peter Pan” play, a Momoka makeover, a space bike, the creation of an animated show complete with merchandise, invasion plots, a birthday party, a fight against General Winter, money making schemes, holidays, a board game, soccer, failed invasion plans, a ghost, and Natsumi getting a fever. This set contains episodes 27-51.

If you dig animated series like “Shin Chan” and “Pinky And The Brain,” you will dig “Sgt. Frog.” It’s another gag-a-second comedy filled with goofy alien characters and clever and satirical pop culture references about everything from UFC and Facebook to “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and, yes, even the Stallone soccer film “Victory.” ‘Frog’ is one of those rare comedies in which everything just works. Heck, even the titles are funny (my favorite- “The Episode We Wanted To Call Tiny Toons Or Anamaniacs, But Those Were Already Taken”). I also like the fact the writers aren’t afraid to poke fun at their own scripts. It’s this kind of absurd, laidback, ridiculous humor that makes the show an absolute delight to watch. I can’t recommend this anime series enough.

Video/Audio:

The 4:3 fullscreen picture quality is sharp. I’m a little surprised there hasn’t been a Blu-ray release yet though.

As far as the audio tracks go, both the English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Japanese Stereo tracks are dramatically diferent experiences. The English track is fast paced and filled with great voice work while the Japanese Stereo track has a different pacing to it. Personally, I enjoy the English track more, but others may enjoy the original language track more.
