Alien Vs. Ninja DVD Review

“Alien Vs. Ninja” is far too goofy and unoriginal to fully enjoy.

The plot: After what appears to be a meteor crash lands on Earth, a group of Iga ninjas are assigned to investigate. Their investigation soon reveals that this meteor like object unleashed murderous aliens upon the land. Can the ninjas stop these lightning fast aliens or will everyone be slaughtered?

“Alien Vs. Ninja” is essentially like “Alien Vs. Predator” only without a big budget. In fact, this film hardly has a budget at all. If there was a decent sized budget, it seems as if all the money went to the gore/creature FX and the sword fight choreography because those are the only admirable aspects about this film. Simply put, “Alien Vs. Ninja” feels like a fan film. The characters are cartoonish, the humor is eye-rolling, the film is visually unappealing (thanks to nauseating shakey cam), the CGI is atrocious, and the alien design is laughable at best. For a Vs. film, I expected something far more entertaining or at least something that manages to live up to the title.

Video/Audio:

The widescreen picture quality is fine despite the mediocre cinematography.

This disc includes both English and Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks. The English dub is downright pitiful. My suggestion is to only play the Japanese track as the voice acting is far better.

Extras include trailers for “Alien Vs. Ninja,” “Robogeisha,” “Mutant Girls Squad,” “Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl,” “Daytime Drinking,” “Ghost Train,” “Ichi,” “Mush-Shi,” “Kamui Gaiden,” and the Hong Kong Connection series. Also included is a 20 minute making of that contains interviews, discussions about the material, and behind-the-scenes footage.
