S.W.A.T.: Firefight Blu-ray Review

“S.W.A.T.: Firefight” is another pointless sequel.

The plot: After an L.A. S.W.A.T. officer (Paul Cutler) is sent to Detroit to train a S.W.A.T. team to pass their certification test, Paul becomes caught up in a dangerous situation involving an unstable ex-Government agent (Walter) who is out for revenge for the accidental death of his girlfriend. There is also, of course, a romantic subplot with Paul and a psychologist (Kim). Will the S.W.A.T. team be able to survive Walter or will they die trying? Will Paul and Kim hook up? Will anyone care what happens when the end rolls around?

It’s been 8 years since the forgettable S.W.A.T. film, and for no apparent reason, Sony has decided to make a straight to DVD sequel with Gabriel Macht (“The Spirit”) and Robert Patrick (What hasn’t he been in?). The result? A completely forgettable sequel filled with dizzying shots that will make you want Dramamine, obnoxious flashy editing, and bad acting. The worst aspect, however, is undoubtedly the script. Not only is there little in the way of action, but nearly 80% of the movie has Robert Patrick telling Gabriel Macht and company that they are going to die. Don’t the writers know to show not tell?

Summary: Skip “S.W.A.T.: Firefight”.

Video/Audio:

The 1.78:1 1080p picture quality has sharp looking colors, but unfortunately, the lackluster cinematography sort of ruins the look of the film.

The 5.1 DTS-HD audio track is fine. The music, dialogue, and the very few action sequences sounded clear through the speakers.

Extras include Sony film trailers, BD-Live capablities, and a featurette titled “Sharp Shooting: On The Set” that mainly covers the actors training.
