Tormented and Made For Each Other DVD Reviews
“Tormented” and “Made For Each Other” are two uninspired IFC Film releases.
Made For Each Other
The story: Having been married three sex-free months, Dan is starting to feel frustrated with marriage. One day at work, Dan gets duped into having sex with his boss who happens to be his wife’s sister. Guilty for what he has done, Dan wants to even the score and have someone sleep with his wife. Dan decides to hire Mack Mackenzie (a cheesy stage actor) to woo his wife. Will his wife fall for Mack? Will the truth about this ordeal come out? Will their marriage fall apart?
Despite a likeable cast featuring George Segal, Samm Levine, Patrick Warburton, Bijou Phillips, and Chistopher and Danny Masterson, “Made For Each Other” is an embarrassing raunchy sex comedy filled with lame jokes about jean shorts, BBQ sauce, not-so-clever sexual innuendos, and yes, even a elderly married couple sex sight gag. Everything about this movie just feels cartoony. None of the characters seem genuine or real whatsoever (especially with all of the “Scrubs” esque fantasies/flashbacks). Everything in the film is just played for cheap laughs but the problem is hardly anything elicits laughter thanks to the tired humor. About the only amusing bit here is seeing Warburton in “Waterworld The Musical.” Too bad that wasn’t the whole movie…
Video/Audio:
‘Made’ may have a bland visiual style (and some dirt specs to boot), but the1.78:1 widescreen picture quality is generally pretty solid.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track would be fine if the re-recorded dialogue didn’t sound so off.
Extras include IFC Film trailers (including one for “Made For Each Other”), 13 minutes of deleted scenes, 12 ½ minutes of extended scenes, Samm Levine ouutakes, and a behind the scenes feaurette containing interviews with the cast, clips of the movie, etc.
Tormented
The Film:
In this British zombie slasher flick, a bullied student (Darren) who committed suicide returns from the grave to seek revenge against those who mocked him mercilessly (namely the insensitive, spoiled preppy kids). If you’ve ever seen a slasher flick before, there are no surprises to be found here story-wise. You can see every scare or death scene coming miles away. It’s a run-of-the-mill high school revenge slasher flick filled with idiotic stock characters that the writer purposely wants you to hate (like the idiotic DJ character at the start of the film). About the only mildly interesting aspect of the film are the strange, out-of-place comedi moments involving the zombie. Unfortunately, these comedic bits aren’t remotely funny and don’t jive well tonally with the rest of the film. Skip it.
Video/Audio:
The 2.35:1 widescreen picture quality is easily the best thing about this entire disc. This is a supremely well shot film.
From the rock songs and score to the dialogue and sound f/x, the Dolby Digital 5.1 does its job well.
The only extras are IFC film trailers (including one for “Tormented”) and a behind the scenes featurette that includes a collection of set footage as well as brief looks at make-up and special effects work.
