IMAX Under The Sea Blu-ray Review
“IMAX Under The Sea” obviously loses something on home video, but this Blu-ray release is still worth a watch.
As I’ve stated in the past, I’m not sure the world needs another underwater documentary, but alas, we have another one titled “IMAX Under The Sea” that is narrated by Jim Carrey (who surprisingly does a fine job). As you can imagine, the film loses its impact on home video as it was intended for a massive IMAX screen. With that said, ‘Sea’ is still a dazzling visual feast that showcases under water life in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Among the sea creatures you can expect to catch a glimpse of are Sea lions, Jellyfish, Great White Sharks, Sea Snakes, Corals, and strange creatures such as the Cuddlefish or Sea Dragons. Other topics explored in this documentary are sybmbiotic relationships, mating habits and dangers of the sea.
Summary: At 41 minutes, ‘Under The Sea’ is a little too short for my taste, but the incredible imagery is definitely worth seeing.
The 1.85:1 1080p picture quality is flat-out perfect. The colors are crystal clear. You really get the sensation that you are down there filming yourself.
The 5.1 DTS-HD is fine despite the fact that added sound F/X and cheesy song inclusions are utterly unnecessary.
Extras:
* “Filming IMAX: Under The Sea”- A behind-the-scenes featurette about shooting the documentary with an IMAX camera.
* 5 Expedition Webisode Segments from Papua New Guinea- New Britain and Milne Bay, South Australia, The Great Barrier Reef and Indonesia. Included in these websiodes are behind-the-scenes footage of the locations that the film crew shot at, people they encountered, how the IMAX, camera is operated, etc.
