Southland Season 1 DVD Review
“Southland” is a better than average cop show.

In these 7 episodes of season 1, viewers are introduced to L.A. police offers (Ben and Cooper) as well as Detectives (Sammy, Lydia, Nate, Sal, and Russell). While the series does delve into the characters and their interactions, there are also plenty of subplots regarding the officers investigating shootings, missing persons, deaths, thieves and drugs.
While “The Shield” set the standard for cop shows (and L.A. cop shows), “Southland” is actually a fairly decent cop series in its own right. The writers do a fine job in setting this series apart from the countless other cop shows by focusing more on characters (which is something that tends to be forgotten in many repetitive series these days). Sure, the series borrows from the likes of “Training Day” and “The Shield” (obviously), but it has a fresh enough perspective to keep viewers engaged.
Summary: If you are a fan of this genre, check “Southland” out. You can also check out season 2 will begin airing on TNT March second.
The widescreen picture quality is high quality. This is a very nice looking series. I wish all series looked this good!
There are no problems with the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. From the sounds of L.A. to the dialogue, everything sounds crisp and clear here.
The only extra is an informative 18 ½ minute featurette titled “Southland: Redefining The Cop Drama” contains interviews, discussions about the themes, the show, etc.
