If you haven’t already seen Cameron Crowe’s “Say Anything,” what are you waiting for? Not only is it a classic 80’s romantic comedy, but it’s also one of the best romantic films (and coming of age stories) periods. Films simply don’t get much better than this. It’s a simple, sweet, identifiable story about love, relationships, and deciding what to do with your life after high school. The two leads characters (Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court) are both charming and real and they are wonderfully played by John Cusack and Ione Skye respectively.
Speaking of Cusack and Skye, this is far and away his best role. From his quirky mannerisms to his iconic and heartfelt boombox scene, Cusack acts his heart out here. I wish he still cared about acting instead of going through the motions in disposable Hollywood films like “2012.” As for Skye, it’s a shame she hasn’t been in more movies as she is a talented actress. She has great chemistry with Cusack and her character seems as genuine and real as anyone you’d meet in real life.
Summary: “Say Anything” is a must own movie.
The 1.85:1 1080p picture quality is solid. The colors look a bit faded, but this is the best the film has looked on disc. The 5.1 DTS-HD audio track is sufficient enough.
Extras include a trivia track, theatrical trailers and TV spots, a Cameron Crowe interview, 5 alternate scenes, 10 deleted scenes, 13 extended scenes, a photo gallery, a vintage featurette, a solid commentary by Cameron Crowe, Ione Skye, John Cusack (with a 20 min. intro prior to the commentary), a featurette titled “An Iconic Film Revisited: Say Anything…20 Years Later,” and an “I Love Say Anything…” featurette in which minor celebs talk about the film.
